Joe’s story

A working life,
made by hand.

Furniture craft, complex building projects and practical community work—connected by the same instinct to make, repair and help.

Beginning in Letterfrack

Sixteen young people.
Three years of craft.

In October 1982, Joe joined Connemara West’s new Craft Training Programme in Woodskills.

The programme brought together joinery, wood carving, sculpture, marquetry, cabinetmaking and woodturning. It was an early chapter in Letterfrack’s furniture-training tradition—and the foundation of Joe’s working life.

A career in motion
1982–85

Woodskills, Letterfrack

Three years of practical training in furniture and allied wood crafts through Connemara West’s pilot programme.

1985–96

Britain and Europe

Joe’s career took him into shopfitting, listed-building restoration, reinforced-concrete construction and site management. Work in London, Scotland and Barcelona brought a different scale to the practical skills he had learned in Letterfrack.

From 1996

Home to Connemara

Returning to Ireland in 1996, Joe established a carpentry and groundworks business. His subsequent work included hotel refurbishment, private homes, retail buildings and coastal projects in Connemara.

Community

Skills put to local use

With FORUM Connemara, Joe’s work as a Tús supervisor involved supporting participants, organising placements and managing practical community projects. He also helped support the Marconi Men’s Shed in Clifden.

The next chapter

The Renvyle workshop

Alongside his wider working life, Joe has made and restored furniture in Renvyle. He now wants to pass on those furniture-making skills to others.
